Tuned or Kickresume?

Kickresume and Tuned make the same promise: tailor a resume to a job posting using only what is already in it. Kickresume is a resume builder with 40 templates, a website builder and a mobile app, where tailoring is one tool among many; Premium is $19 a month. Tuned is built around tailoring: it shows every change with the line it came from and fits the result to your page count; Pro is $19 a month. Here is what each one does, and where Kickresume is the better choice.

Tuned wrote this page. What it says about Kickresume comes from Kickresume’s own pages, listed under Sources. We have not run Kickresume’s tailoring ourselves; when we do, the results will be added here.

What is the same

The promise. Both products say the tailored resume is made from what you wrote, and nothing is invented. Kickresume puts it as “no fluff, no fakes”.

The starting point. Both take the resume you already have: upload the file, paste the job posting, and tailoring starts from there.

The file. Both hand you a finished resume to download, not text to format yourself.

What Tuned does differently

The same promise, checked in the open. Kickresume’s page puts its tailoring at “about 80% accurate right out of the gate”, so a rewritten resume still needs a careful read before it goes out. Tuned is built to make that read short: changed words are highlighted, every change shows the base line it came from, and an edit with no source in your base resume isn’t saved in the first place.

A gap becomes a question. When the posting asks for something your resume doesn’t mention, Tuned doesn’t write it in — it asks whether you have done it. Say yes, and the answer is saved to your base resume for the next posting.

The page count is part of the job. Pick one, two or three pages. Tuned measures the finished PDF and turns the least relevant lines off until it fits.

Tailoring never touches the base. A tailored version is a set of changes laid over your base resume, not a copy of it: what is turned off for one job is still there for the next.

Where Kickresume is the better choice

If the look of the resume is what you are working on, use Kickresume: 40 templates against our four layouts.

  • More than a resume. Cover letter templates that match the resume, a personal website builder and a mobile app.
  • A human proofreader. Kickresume offers proofreading by a person, in English or Spanish. Tuned has no people in the loop.
  • Longer plans cost less. $27 for three months or $54 for a year, with no cap on tailoring.
  • Students. Kickresume Premium is free for students who can prove their status.

Questions

Is Tuned a free alternative to Kickresume?

For tailoring, yes. Tuned’s free plan has no time limit and needs no card: 3 base resumes and up to 4 tailoring runs every month. Kickresume’s free plan includes one use of resume tailoring; unlimited tailoring is part of Premium at $19 a month. On Tuned’s free plan the first tailoring run is written by the larger model, as on Pro, and later ones by a lighter model.

Both say nothing is made up. What is the difference?

The promise is the same; the difference is in how you can check it. In Tuned every change is highlighted and shows the line of your base resume it came from, and an edit with no source there isn’t saved. We have not run Kickresume’s tailoring, so we don’t say how well it keeps its promise.

Does Tuned have resume templates?

4 layouts, and every design setting is free on every plan. Three of the four are built for applicant tracking systems to read without errors. If you want dozens of designs to choose from, Kickresume has 40.

Can I bring my Kickresume resume to Tuned?

Yes. Download it from Kickresume as a PDF and upload the file to Tuned: it becomes your base resume.
